Boy bait soup
Let’s just get this out of the way: this is not a pretty soup. It’s a mauvey taupe, roughly the color of standard-issue hospital food trays. It’s not smooth and creamy, nor is it a clear, refreshing broth. Instead, it’s a murky, lumpy, funky-looking sludge. It is in no way sexy, and yet, I think it’s how I won over my ex-boyfriend. So, it has that going for it. This...

A cake for all religions
I made this cake back in December (another work treat), but I haven’t had a chance to share so far. Given the speed with which the loaves disappear, I thought I’d make a larger portion this time. (We did quite well …) This moist, spicy apple cake, baked in a tube pan, was my offering. I think we’ve established that the office is not picky. And yes, I know. We’ve...

Initially, I decided to make this recipe as a holiday gift — a little...

When I don't feel like it
As much as I profess to like to cook, sometimes, I just don’t wanna. Like on a weeknight. When I’m tired. And it’s cold. And dark. And has been for hours. In New York, that usually means take out, but as much as I like my Thai or Ukrainian or my falafel and sushi, there’s something much more comforting and cozy about a home-cooked meal. For those nights, there are meals...

My best ever
Happy New Year! 2010! (Geez, just saying “twenty-ten” makes me feel old …) I may have neglected you a bit, and for that I’m sorry — getting back to work from a lazy holiday schedule is rough! Also rough? Going from eighty to fifty to seventeen degrees. I just want to curl up under the covers and hibernate until New York decides to thaw. Instead, every moment...
