[sidebar: this is what change looks like]
This blog is not about my work, nor is it about politics. This blog is about my stories. It is about things I like. For the most part, I think I’ve done a fair job of keeping this distinction — but I thought this was important. So, please pardon me while I climb up onto my soapbox for a minute.

In my day job, I work in health policy. I work to improve U.S. health policy and the health care delivery system. For me, this includes universal coverage, or guaranteed, affordable, high quality health care for all. As many have said before me, the bill passed by the House of Representatives last night (and by the Senate last fall) is imperfect. But for me, it is a good thing. It is a good start. From the perspective of health and health care as an ethical issue and a moral imperative, it is a giant step for equality.

I think the President summed it up best: “In the end, what this day represents is another stone firmly laid in the foundation of the American Dream. Tonight, we answered the call of history as so many generations of Americans have before us. When faced with crisis, we did not shrink from our challenge — we overcame it. We did not avoid our responsibility — we embraced it. We did not fear our future — we shaped it.”
